Mayo County Council has welcomed the announcement by Minister of State, Deputy Michael Ring, of an investment of €1.8m in tourism infrastructure in the county. The Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Councillor Austin Francis O'Malley, said: “This investment is most welcome and will link the Great Western Greenway with Castlebar and will spread the benefits of this most successful project.”

Mayo Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin has welcomed confirmation from the management of Mayo General Hospital that it is considering using St Mary’s Hospital, Castlebar as temporary accommodation for its renal dialysis unit while work is being completed on Mayo General’s unit in the New Year.

A new poll commissioned by The Iona Institute shows that the public is split in its attitude towards the Catholic with 47 per cent currently viewing the Church unfavourably, while 46 per cent believe that Church teaching is still of benefit to society.
