Students prepare for Our School’s Got Talent Mayo County final

The excitement is building ahead of this Friday night’s Mayo County final of Special Olympics’ Our School’s Got Talent in association with Supermac’s. This year’s competition has already showcased a wealth of talent throughout the county and now just 25 acts from 15 different schools in Mayo remain, all hoping to clinch a place in the Our School’s Got Talent Connacht final. The Connacht final will take place on Friday December 2 in the Royal Theatre, Castlebar.

Time to get ready for winter – Ring

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring has urged people across the Mayo area to make sure they are ready for any severe weather that may lie ahead in the coming months. Minister Ring was speaking this week as the Government launched its Winter Ready Campaign. “Last year the country was ground to a veritable halt due to heavy snowfall and severe icy conditions. The cold snap had a significant impact on people’s lives, and on the economy. While we can’t prevent these severe weather events, we can do our out utmost to make sure we’re all as prepared as possible. A number of lessons must be learned from last year. For that reason the Government Task Force on Emergency Planning has launched a Winter-Ready Information Campaign to give the public advice on how to prepare for the coming winter.

Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann activities

The Cathair na Mart branch of Comhaltas Ceoltórí Éireann recently hosted a two-day féile to commemorate aspects of Mayo’s cultural and heritage, including music, language and folklore. This annual event was centred round the figure of John McGrath from Erris, a famous composer, fiddle player, and teacher of Irish music. McGrath’s contribution to Irish traditional music is largely forgotten by the general public and remembered mostly by the older generation of Irish musicians.
