Councillors want right hand on the N5

A number of Castlebar councillors have called on the NRA to put in a number of right hand turning junctions on the N5 between Castlebar and Turlough. Cllr Michael Kilcoyne raised the issue through a notice of motion, looking for traffic calming measures to be put in place at the turn into the Abbeybreaffy nursing home for those travelling from Castlebar. Cllr Kilcoyne told the meeting, “I’m not looking for the road to be widened, it’s wide enough as it is. All it will cost is the gallon of paint to put the markings down on the road.” His motion received universal support from the other members, with Cllr Henry Kenny asking that consideration also be given to something similar to the turn into the Church of Ireland church in Turlough a few miles further out the road.

Four hundred and eighty teenagers and their leaders arrived from No Name Clubs from all over the country in their Sunday best to attend an event that is set to become a headline feature in the national No Name Club calendar of events.

Mayo to feature in new road safety ad

A 40-strong film crew descended on Mayo this week for the filming of a television commercial about road safety, with particular emphasis on cycling safety.

Castlebar Cycling Club were involved in the filming, which is due to air mid-March according to the Road Safety Authority.

HSE primary care site for Westport

At the town council’s monthly meeting last Thursday Cathaoirleach of the council, Councillor Ollie Gannon, said that the council has come to an agreement with the HSE in relation to the purchase of a site for a €5 million primary care centre.

Once plans are in place the proposal for the centre will come before the town council.
