Lord of the Dance star helps Manchester troupe stage reunion for Mayo Gathering

The Manchester based multi award-winning Irish dancer; James Keegan who is one of the principal dancers of the world-famous Lord of the Dance show is just one of the stars who has confirmed his appearance at a special Young, Gifted & Green (YGG) reunion concert for the Manchester-Mayo Gathering. The special event will take place on Friday, August 2 at the prestigious Ballina Arts Theatre in County Mayo, Ireland. It will feature performances from former members of YGG and the Keegan Academy of Irish Dance, along with a host of special guests from Manchester and performers from Mayo which include the Atlantic Rhythm Production company and Carmel Gunning. The group is still looking for other performers and companies from Mayo who would like to get involved with the event.

Tony Hennigan, one of the organisers of the event and the creative director of the troupe which was based at St Bede’s College, said: “The idea for the reunion came from Louise Keegan who was the group’s choreographer and now has her own Irish Academy with her brother James. They have already been in touch with a number of former members who are scattered around the globe. We want to try and trace as many of the hundreds of performers and special guests that have been involved with group over the last 15 years.

Ballina councillors claim town will be ‘isolated’ by road plans

All of the nine elected members of Ballina Town Council were seriously critical of all the different route options for linking the N26 out of Foxford to the N5 on to Dublin that are under consideration at present, at the April meeting of the council on Wednesday night. They were so critical that Fine Gael councillor Mark Winters proposed that Ballina Town Council reject all of the route options, which was seconded by independent councillor Gerry Ginty. Paul Hyland, senior executive engineer in the Mayo national roads design office, gave the council a presentation on the various number of routes that are under consideration. The routes will link up with the N5 at any one of a number of potential junctions between Turlough and Bohola.

Households face more expensive solid fuel this winter

A new solid fuel carbon tax will come into effect across the country in five days’ time on Wednesday May 1, when a new excise duty will be laid on solid fuels, such as coal and peat. The new duty which is being administered by the Revenue Commissioners will make those who first supply the fuel in the State responsible for collection; this will be either the wholesaler who brings in the fuel to Ireland, or the retailer who sources their own supply from outside the State.
