It is somewhat ironic that the building on the Green in Castlebar where the Land League was founded should later bear a name denoting Empire - The Imperial. I sometimes sit on a bench on the Green or the Mall that traverses it and mentally step through the historical significance of what is before me.

The first post-lockdown survey by Irish Business Against Litter shows Ballina in 13th position in the ranking of 40 areas nationwide. While the majority of towns have cleaned up over the past 12 months, litter in main cities has worsened to levels not seen in ten years. Portlaoise emerged as the cleanest town. The study found no fall-off in PPE litter across the country.

A group of Mayo mountain bike enthusiasts took on an 'Everesting' challenge earlier this summer and in doing so raised nearly €7,000, which was split evenly between Croí, the heart and stroke charity, and Mayo Mental Health Services. The fundraiser attempted to raise awareness of the importance of looking after your physical and mental health.
