McCormack welcomes weed control plans for local lakes

Councillor Eugene McCormack has welcomed the commitment by council management to implement the report in relation to the control of weed growth on Lough Lannagh and Billberry Lough. The commitment came following a motion tabled by Cllr McCormack at last Thursday’s Castlebar Town Council meeting requesting that the report be implemented.

The report “Aquatic plant management recommendations for Billberry and Lannagh Loughs”, was carried out by Dr Joe Caffrey of Inland Fisheries Ireland and details how the extensive weed growth on both lakes can be dealt with on a medium to long term basis.

Baxter announcement sends shockwaves around Castlebar

The news that 110 jobs are to be shed by Baxter in Castlebar in the coming months, sent shockwaves through the town when news of the losses emerged late last weekend. The pharmaceutical company which has been in Castlebar since 1972 is one of the major employers in Castlebar and surrounding areas and this news will have come to a shock to hundreds of families in the county. Since the news there have been widespread calls from political and local groups for the Government to ensure that all is done to ensure there are no further job losses from the plant.

All Mayo train stations now have ticket vending machines

All Iarnród Éireann stations in Mayo have now been ticket vending machines. Machines were installed and commissioned at Westport, Ballyhaunis, Claremorris, Castlebar, and Ballina in recent weeks to complete the availability of ticket vending machines at stations in the county.

Ballina playground to get major investment — Mulherin

Mayo Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin has welcomed the news that the playground at Tom Ruane Park in Ballina is to re-developed as part of a €200,000 investment in the recreational amenity. Deputy Mulherin said a new play area with landscaped mounds and paths is expected to be completed by next spring. The Tom Ruane Park playground is a popular and much-loved recreational area and open space enjoyed by families and visitors to Ballina, who make great use of the park's many impressive facilities.
