Numbers on Live Register dropped by 6.2 per cent in Mayo in 2013 — O’Mahony

Fine Gael Mayo TD John O’Mahony has this week welcomed a 6.2 per cent drop in the number of people on the Live Register in Mayo over the last 12 months. Deputy O’Mahony was speaking following the publication of figures by the Central Statistics Office, which show that, nationally, the Live Register has now dropped for the last 18 months in a row.

Woman found not guilty of assaulting neighbour’s child

A woman was found not guilty of assaulting a former neighbour’s child following a case at Ballyhaunis District Court sitting in Castlebar this week. The woman was alleged to have grabbed the child by the neck, twisted his ear, and slapped him on his bottom in the incident. The case saw the child give evidence through a video link to the court, and the court was also shown a DVD of an interview carried out with the child shortly after the incident by trained Garda personnel.

Probation report on man who threw pint glass at barmaid

A Ballyhaunis man who pleaded guilty to an assault charge arising out of an incident where he ended up throwing a pint glass at a barmaid and narrowly missing her has had the sentencing in his case adjourned until April 1, while a probation report is carried out on him. However, he was warned by Judge Mary Devins that this was something she was taking very seriously and “could warrant a custodial sentence.”

Chambers accuses Government of punishing schools with book rental schemes

Fianna Fáil representative in Castlebar Lisa Chambers has called on the Government to reconsider its decision to discriminate against schools that made sacrifices to start their own school book rental schemes. The local election candidate has accused the Minister for Education Ruairí Quinn of punishing schools in Mayo that fundraised heavily, cut money from elsewhere and got into debt to establish book rental schemes to help parents out.
