Call for Mayo General to be taken out of maternity review

Fears about the future of the maternity unit at Mayo General Hospital continued to grow as new details emerged this week about the confidential draft review of services that is under way at hospitals in the west and northwest.

The report sets out six options for “services reconfiguration”, including the downgrading or closure of maternity services at Mayo General Hospital, Portiuncula Hospital Ballinasloe, Letterkenny General Hospital, and Sligo General Hospital.

Belmullet gets €6 million for sewerage scheme

The news that the long awaited Belmullet sewerage scheme has been given €6 million funding was welcomed this week. Local Fine Gael councillor Gerry Coyle said that while there has been some concern expressed by local residents and fishermen in relation to the location of the proposed plant and outflow pipe, he believes the new modern plant should allay some of these concerns. He said this week: “Belmullet is a modern and vibrant town and it deserves all the investment it can get towards improving its infrastructure so that that it can progress into the future.” Councillor Coyle thanked Taoiseach Enda Kenny, Minister Michael Ring, and Minister Phil Hogan for their commitment to the project. He said that both himself and Minister Ring had worked tirelessly on behalf of the community to have the scheme delivered.

Ruane wants action on patient being ‘led up the garden path’ over hip operations

Sinn Féin Castlebar town councillor and Local Election candidate Thérése Ruane has accused the HSE of leading an elderly patient awaiting a hip operation “up the garden path”.

Cllr Ruane said the local man has been awaiting an operation for a painful hip condition for months and is getting no response from the HSE as to when he can expect to have his procedure carried out.
