Man was driving dangerously due to drug debt fears

Ballina District Court heard on Tuesday that a man who careened around a Ballina estate in a Nissan Micra in an attempt to avoid gardaí was only driving the car because he owed his passenger money for drugs.

Saddle Up for Epilepsy launched

Irish cycling hero Sean Kelly was on hand this week to launch the Saddle Up for Epilepsy Cycle in Breaffy House. The charity cycle will take place on Saturday February 14 departing from the Breaffy Sports Arena and it offers three different lengths of cycle routes — 40km, 80km, and 120km.

Funding secured for podiatrist for diabetes services in Mayo

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring has welcomed the announcement that funding for a Podiatrist for diabetes services in Mayo has been secured.

Minister Ring stated: “This is something that has been sought for quite some time and I am very pleased that funding has been provided for this. In 2010, the HSE sanctioned the development of a National Footcare Programme, employing 16 senior podiatrists to identify, assess, and treat people with diabetes at high risk of developing serious foot ulceration thus preventing loss of limb.

Drunk and abusive man to make charity payment

A Knockmore man may avoid a conviction for his drunken behaviour if he makes a €200 payment to the local hospice by February 10.

Kevin Bourke, Ballymacredmond, Knockmore, came before Ballina District Court on Tuesday, and pleaded guilty to one public order charge of intoxication.

A woman who was home from the UK visiting family for the Christmas holidays made a sickening discovery while out walking at Moorehall with her mother on January 2, prompting local animal welfare charity, Mayo SPCA, to issue yet another appeal to pet owners on properly spaying and neuturing their dogs and cats.

A 49-year-old woman came before Castlebar District Court this week accused of making a hoax bomb warning about a device ‘primed and ready to go off’ at Downing Street around the time of Margaret Thatcher’s death in April 2013.
