Sara wanted to change her life, says heartbroken father

The father of Sara Staunton, the 28-year-old mother who was killed in her home in Mayo Abbey in December 2013, said his daughter told him on the morning of her death that she wanted to turn her life around.

Ray Gralton (23), with an address at Mount Prospect, Roscommon, was sentenced on Monday to 10 years for killing Ms Staunton at Portagh, Mayo Abbey, on December 13 2013.

Men crashed stolen car into a garden wall

Two men have received jail sentences in a Castlebar court for crashing a stolen car and then abusing hospital staff while they were being treated at the A&E department at Mayo General Hospital.

Michael Maughan, Moneen Campsite, and Owen McDonagh, 35 Cois Abhainn, came before Judge Mary Devins in Castlebar District Court on Wednesday.

County council to hold special meeting to deal with backlog

Mayo County Council will host a special meeting on Thursday April 29 at 10am to clear the backlog of items on its agenda. Cathaoirleach of the council, Cllr Damien Ryan, proposed the holding of a special meeting after it was resolved to adjourn the April meeting of the local authority at 5pm last Monday, as a mark of respect to Cllr Frank Durcan after the recent death of his brother John, and to prepare for a civic reception that was being held by the council for the US Ambassador Mr Kevin O’Malley that evening in the council chamber.

Council pays tribute to recently deceased locals

The members of Mayo County Council paid tribute to a number of people who had recently passed away at their April meeting on Monday. Included in those was the late John Durcan, who was a brother of Cllr Frank Durcan. Cllr Cyril Burke said: “He was a great business man and was highly respected in the town and involved in many areas of the community and will be missed.”
