A meeting took place in Ballina today (Thursday, September 17)  with representatives from Irish Water, Mayo County Council, elected representatives and Ballina Chamber of Commerce to discuss the emergency watermains rehabilitation works which are being fast tracked by Irish Water.

Councillors angered by distribution of top-up roads funding

A number of elected members of the Claremorris Municipal District expressed their disappointment this week at how €440,000 in top-up funding for road works projects in the area was decided to be spent. Fianna Fáil Cllr Damien Ryan told the Mayo Advertiser yesterday: "Bar a very small corner near Claremorris, none of the money came to projects in the part of the district that is now part of the new Galway-West constituency for the General Election."

Castlebar IDA building gets planning approval

This week saw planning permission granted by Mayo County Council for a new €5 million IDA building in Castlebar. The new building will be located on the Moneen Road in the town on a site that is already fully serviced and owned by the IDA.

JJ Burke Car Sales Ballinrobe is hosting a fundraising fashion show in aid of Roisin Tansey Trust Fund tomorrow evening, Saturday, September 12.

Roisin is now six years old. When she was three years old she fell off the couch, causing her to be paralysed from her neck down. Roisin spent six months this year in Kentucky, USA, in the Frazier Institute having intensive physio on her spinal cord. Progress is slow but there is an improvement.

Fianna Fáil General Election candidate for Mayo Cllr Lisa Chambers says the Government’s Water Conservation Grant will actually end up costing Mayo taxpayers money and will do nothing to encourage people to conserve water.  Cllr Chambers made the comments after letters encouraging people to sign up for the grant arrived in the post last week.

Northern Irish man killed in road traffic accident

A 55-year-old Antrim man was killed near Hollymount last Sunday afternoon following a head on collision with a van. He was named this week as Antrim native, Robert Wright. An inquest into the man's death was opened earlier this week, but was adjourned until December.

Gardai from Claremorris Garda Station are asking for any witnesses to the crash which happened on the R331 between Hollymount and Claremorris between 1pm and 1.30pm last Sunday, September 6 to contact them in Claremorris Garda Station on (094) 9372080.

The bright sky glistened on our downturned faces as we turned left and past miles of sandy Mulranny beach when mum didn’t stop the car. We were nearly in tears and barely noticed the overpowering gloriousness of the gigantic rhododendron magenta entwined with thorny golden gorse. The car was slowing down, trapped behind a sheep with pink on its fleece. Slower and slower until we stopped. Out we traipsed, my toddler brothers and I, still looking glum. Mum touched my chin and pointed. The view was glorious. Azure blue sea gently waved in the distance, Clare Island stood tall whilst six seals danced proudly at the base of Croagh Patrick, its church sparkling like the moon at the top. Creeping down the rocky, sandy tor, sheep gently grazed amidst the gorse and bog weeds, pebbles creeking up our sandals, uncomfortable under our toes. And there hidden, like our very own secluded island, a beach, with golden sandy sand untouched by human. Well, it felt like it was untouched by humans, we were the only ones here. We settled the boys on a blanket with their spades, and true to form they found they had better spades, using their nimble fingers to shovel sand into their mouths as though they had never been fed. Mother fixed her head scarf and began reading her Maeve Binchy; mind you, with two toddlers I doubted she would get much reading done.

The demand of the Mayo football faternity for tickets for tomorrow's All Ireland football semi-final replay with Dublin is gone well beyond what the county has seen ever for a game at this stage of the competition. After last week's sell-out drawn match the sold out signs went up early this week with general sale tickets being snapped up within hours.
