Coillte hosts tree identification event in Belleek Woods during Tree Week

Last week Coillte hosted a tree identification walk attended by Culleens National School as part of ESB Tree Week 2016. This was one of the events that Coillte hosted as part Tree Week 2016, along with a series of nature walks and tree planting events to inspire people to experience the positive role that trees play in our lives. In addition Coillte donated 15,000 trees that were planted by community groups and schools all around the country, bringing thousands of people together to get their hands dirty, and add more green to neighbourhoods all around the country.

The Central Statistics Office this week officially launched Census 2016. The census will take place on Sunday, April 24, giving the people of Ireland the chance to make their mark on the future. Everybody who spends the night of Sunday April 24 in Ireland must be included on a census form.

Clerics in Mayo will this weekend bless the county’s roads in a novel ceremony aimed at creating road safety awareness in a bid to reducing the number of people who die in traffic accidents each year. A special ‘Blessing of the Roads Ceremony’ will take place in most parishes and services throughout on Easter Sunday as religious leaders back the campaign to make the roads safer.

Following the initial Public consultation and information gathering event, more detailed surveys and modelling of the River Deel and Crossmolina area have been completed and a Constraints Study identifying key environmental issues has been prepared. This information was subsequently used to identify and analyse a number of flood relief options as part of the proposed scheme and two options are now under consideration.

Anam Cara Mayo will be holding a launch of information pack for bereaved parents in Castlebar on Tuesday, April 12 in the Harlequin Hotel, Castlebar at 11am. The information pack was developed and written by bereaved parents themselves and contains practical information on what helped them to get through the first weeks and months.
With research showing that 6 out of every 10 Irish people know someone whose child has died. The pack includes information booklets on A Mothers Grief, A Dads Grief, Coping with Sudden Death, Supporting My Family, Self Care, Milestones and Challenges and Adults grieving the death of a brother or a sister. Along with the Anam Cara Videos, which can be accessed at www.anamcara.ie/videos this resource will be a great support and source of information for newly bereaved parents and those supporting them after the death of their child. Anam Cara is urging all frontline professionals who come into contact with newly bereaved parents – social workers, funeral directors, An Garda Síochána, HR managers, palliative care teams, doctors, nurses – to get in touch to order the pack. Man killed after car leaves road and enters river

Gardaí from Claremorris are appealing for witnesses to a single vehicle fatal traffic collision. At approximately 8am a 35-year-old male died when his car left the road on the R327 near Cloonfad and entered the Dalgan River. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His body has since been removed to Mayo University Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Castlebar native Cllr. William Lavelle, a member of South Dublin County Council representing Lucan, is to contest the Seanad elections on the Industrial and Commercial Panel. William, who is a Fine Gael councillor, was first elected to South Dublin County Council in 2009 and was re-elected on the first count in the 2014 local elections. William is the Leader of Fine Gael Group on South Dublin County Council.

Padraic McKeon, a retired primary principal teacher from Mayo has departed for Uganda to begin his third volunteer placement with VSO Ireland, the international development organisation that fights poverty through volunteers. Padraic will use his professional skills and experience to volunteer as a teacher educator in the Karamoja region where he will be involved in capacity building for pre-service tutors and students in preparation for school practice.

Mayo supporters left Croke Park yesterday with that all-too-familiar feeling when Castlebar Mitchels saw their dreams of becoming the third Mayo side to claim the Andy Merrigan Cup go up in smoke as a classier Ballyboden St Enda’s side eased home to claim the All Ireland title on a score of 2-14 to 0-7 in GAA headquarters.
