Commercial vacancy rate in Mayo at 14.5 per cent

The commercial vacancy rate in Mayo in quarter two of 2016 was 14.5 per cent, which is above the national average of 13.1 per cent. Commercial vacancy rates in Ireland have increased, from 12.6 per cent in quarter two of 2015 to 13.1 per cent in quarter two of 2016 according to new research published by GeoDirectory this week. A total of 28,615 of the 219,176 commercial address points in Ireland were vacant.

Pesticide information campaign to protect Mayo’s drinking water

Mayo has just emerged from one of the wettest winters ever recorded and thankfully we have turned a corner and summer is upon us. Many people are taking advantage of improved weather conditions to catch up on some spraying (or weed control activities). Young People from Mayo Excel in Foróige Youth Citizenship Awards

The Foróige Youth Citizenship Awards in partnership with Aldi took place last Saturday July 2 in the Citywest Hotel and Conference Centre, Dublin. Islandeady Foróige Club scooped the Gold Star Award for its project "A village enhancement project including the re-development of a local slipway", and Cyber Crew Ballina Neighbourhood Youth Project won a Bronze Star Award for its project "An internet safety awareness campaign". There was lots of other Mayo involvement in the awards.

Belmullet sewerage scheme to finally get under way next week

Works to develop the long awaited €9 million wastewater treatment plant in Belmullet town will begin next week and is set to take 18 months to complete, Irish Water announced this week.

Minister of State for Regional Economic Development Michael Ring has welcomed the announcement by Irish Water that works will begin and said that he will be officiating at the sod turning for the plant. He said: “Cllr Gerry Coyle and I met with the former minister for environment, Phil Hogan, on several occasions regarding this project. The need for this sewerage scheme has been talked about for 50 years. I am delighted that it is this Fine Gael led Government that have delivered this project for the Belmullet area."

Housing associations 'don't want to know' when it comes to helping those in trouble in Mayo

Housing associations are not willing to help people struggling with mortgages in one-off cases, despite them having the ability to do so, according to one elected member of Mayo County Council this week. Sinn Féin councillor Gerry Murray hit out at the sector saying: "There are people out there in a very serious situation and the only exit strategy they have is at the mercy of the likes of Respond and Clúid in the voluntary housing sector who have no interest in pulling people out of mortgage arrears, certainly in urban areas, and in rural areas especially."

Process to get proper figure on housing need under way in the county

Mayo County Council has begun a process to try and establish the exact housing need in the county. They have written to everyone who is currently on the housing list in the county to establish if all of those on the list are still in need of social housing, with a return deadline of September 21 this year.
