Why should we study history? Well, frankly, history is the study of human nature, and history most definitely repeats itself. History can teach us lessons so that we are forearmed when facing situations, better informed when planning to proceed. The history of the long campaign to establish the Regional Technical College (RTC, now the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology, GMIT) campus in Mayo contains, I believe, guidance on how the Castlebar based college can be rescued from those who oppose its survival.

Future of GMIT in Castlebar comes into focus again

The news this week that five courses at the Castlebar campus of GMIT are to be pulled has been greeted with shock and dismay in the county. On Monday afternoon staff at the college and elected officials in the county were told of the plans to cut the courses in Digital Media and Society, Sustainable Building Technology, Business with Administration and ICT, and heritage related programmes, History and Geography, Culture and the Environment.

Kenny to remain on as Taoiseach for now

After one of the most testing weeks in his tenure as Taoiseach and indeed leader of the Fine Gael party, An Taoiseach Enda Kenny has said that he will outline his plans for his departure from the leadership of his party once he completes his trip to the United States over the St Patrick's Day holidays. Mr Kenny will be in Washington DC on Wednesday March 15 and Thursday March 16, with his meeting with US President Donald Trump scheduled for Thursday March 16.

MayoNorth.ie and Ballina Chamber are hosting a food tourism seminar in the Great National Hotel Ballina, on Tuesday March 28 at 9.30am, and are inviting all types of food businesses in Mayo and west Sligo to attend. The seminar and networking event, proudly supported by Michael Carr Foods, Ballina Chamber, Bunzl McLaughlin and the Great National Hotel Ballina is part of a drive to highlight and develop the food offering locally, and to emphasise the significant value to the hospitality and food industries of food tourism, and the importance of using local ingredients to convey a sense of “place on a plate”, by offering fresh, locally sourced, seasonal food. Recent research conducted on behalf of Failte Ireland showed that holidaymakers in Ireland spend close to €2 billion annually on food and drink during their stay.

Dine at the Dining Room for children with disabilities

Local chef Kevin Stirzaker and his team at Dining Room on Bridge Street, Castlebar, are holding a charity event to benefit the Enable Ireland Safari Club for children with disabilities. Popular publican Mick Byrnes of Byrnes’ pub, will be guest chef for the night under the watchful eye of Kevin and his team. Up to 70 guests will be wined and dined with a specially selected menu over two dinner sittings on Tuesday, at 6.30pm and 9.00pm. Local food and beverage suppliers are also supporting the night.

SIPTU to hold major rally in Westport in support of Tim Hastings workers

SIPTU members from across the country will attend a rally in Westport, on Saturday, March 4, to show their support for workers who have been on strike at the garage since early February. The strike action results from a dispute concerning the alledged non-payment of redundancy entitlements and a refusal by management to respect a Labour Court recommendation alledge the union.

Mayo healthy reading scheme launched at Castlebar library

The Mayo Healthy Reading Scheme was recently launched at Castlebar Library. This joint initiative by the HSE and Mayo County Council Library Services aims to promote the availability of a wide variety of self help books on a range of common psychological, emotional, and parenting issues. A total of 88 books are available free to all library members at the various library branches throughout the county. Topics covered include bereavement, depression, relationship problems, parenting issues, and self esteem. Some of the books available include Children and Bullying, Overcoming Depression, Overcoming Childhood Trauma, The Mindful Way Through Depression, and Parent Power. All of the books have been recommended by health professionals.

Croagh Patrick to turn pink in charity challenge

The Croagh Patrick Pink Link Challenge will take place on Saturday, April 8. The main aim of this event is to form a human link from the bottom to the top of Croagh Patrick to raise awareness of cancer but also to symbolize solidarity for all the people and families affected by a cancer diagnosis. The chain will take approximately 3,000-4,000 people to be successful and anyone can take part and wear something pink to show support. The challenge is based on four different levels which makes it suitable for people of all fitness levels to take part.
