Just one week to go for two Mayo schools ahead of Student Theatre Awards decisions

The wait is almost over for the two Mayo schools who have been nominated for the Bord Gáis Energy Student Theatre Awards, which will take place on Wednesday next, May 17 in the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre.

The schools from Mayo nominated for the awards are Manulla National School and St Joseph's Primary School in Ballinrobe. Manulla National School was shortlisted in the 'Best Set' category for its set creation in the production of Hoodwinked by fourth, fifth, and sixth class students. Judges commented that they “loved the way that all the students came together to create a beautifully vivid and realistic set”. Fifth class student Ally Nestor from St Joseph’s Primary School in Ballinrobe has been shortlisted in the Best Female Performance in a Leading Role category for her performance as The News Reporter in the production The Peace Child. Judges noted Ally “was larger than life and made the top character totally believable and real”.

Dance club for people living with dementia

Community Action on Dementia in Mayo is launching a brand new dance club for people living with dementia and their family carers. The dance club is designed for those in the early to mild stages of dementia, and their family carers, to share the experience together.

The dance club offers a great opportunity to socialise and promote improved mental and physical wellbeing and, very importantly, to have fun. The dance club will take place once a week at the Curam Centre in Claremorris and there is no charge. It is hoped that with enough interest this club will commence in late May. Dance sessions will start at 11.30am and finish at 1pm, with tea and buns included.

One in a million Lobster – finds a new home in Achill

The Achill Experience, Aquarium and Visitor centre on Achill Island has checked in a new and very rare guest – a white lobster. The Marine Institute said such a specimen is extremely rare and very unusual to Irish waters. A genetic mismatch means that the lobster is not the traditional dark blue colour.

This May Irish Heart is encouraging volunteers in Mayo to help sell their iconic happy hearts and raise vital funds to save lives from sudden cardiac arrest, which claims 5,000 lives in Ireland every year. Money raised for the Happy Heart Appeal will go towards Irish Heart’s CPR programmes to create lifesavers in every community in Ireland. Starting CPR can double a person’s chance of survival.
