EirGrid announces changes to Grid West project

EirGrid, Ireland’s electricity grid operator, last Friday announced plans to replace the Grid West electricity transmission project with a smaller-scale development. The Grid West project was proposed in 2012 to connect large amounts of renewable energy to the grid. The decision to replace it was made due to the lower than expected amounts of wind generation in the north Connacht region.

Claremorris native and author Elizabeth Reapy has won the €10,000 Rooney Prize for Irish Literature 2017 for her debut novel Red Dirt. Red Dirt was published in June 2016 by Head of Zeus. The story takes place in Australia, telling the tales of three young Irish migrants escaping the collapsing economy at home. Surrounded by cheap drink and drugs, they make dangerous and impulsive choices — finding themselves in unfathomable situations.

Irish Water has commenced work on a €0.6 million mains rehabilitation project which will ensure a more secure supply of water to businesses and residents in the Claremorris and Crossboyne areas. The works are being carried out by JRPH Ltd on behalf of Irish Water and in partnership with Mayo County Council and will take approximately 20 weeks to be completed.

They will be joined on the night by Adi Roche, voluntary CEO, Chernobyl Children International, who will highlight the work the organisation has been doing in Vesnova Children’s Mental Asylum as well as other programmes in the Chernobyl regions of Belarus, Ukraine, and Western Russia. She will be joined by special guests Sandra Ganley (Mayo Rose) and Niamh Elwood (Galway Rose).

Westport's Pat Scahill was also named as the winner of the Overall National Hero Awards at the ceramony.

A new car sharing service has been launched in Westport and Castlebar towns and plans are under way to roll out the operation to other towns across the county. GoCar, in partnership with Irish Rail, Mayo County Counciland Westport Smarter Travel has launched its car sharing service in Mayo with the first GoCar base situated at Westport and Castlebar train stations and in both town centres.
