The Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht has received details of scientific analysis of ancient human remains which were discovered in 2016 by a local hillwalker on a Mayo mountainside. The discovery generated significant media interest, and research has now revealed that the natural boulder chamber in which the remains were found was used for human burial practice through the Neolithic period, from as early as 3600BC.

Mayo native Tomás Guiry this week presented staff at the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA) with a cheque for €13,805.66. The Foxford local ran 52 individual 5km races in 2017 to raise the much needed funds for the charity. Mr Guiry chose to undertake this mammoth challenge as his aunt Breda Cherakai sadly passed away from motor neurone disease.

Breaffy GAA Club has extended its commitment to reducing the stigma surrounding mental health with the announcement that Mindspace Mayo will now feature on the club's u14 jerseys. It is hoped that the campaign will raise awareness of youth mental health issues in Mayo. GAA clubs have the ability to educate the community on the power of positive mental health and to ensure people understand the importance of seeking help and understanding the services available to them.
