The Marie Carolan Foundation Hallowe’en Ball which took place at the Broadhaven Bay Hotel showcased an array of fancy dress, and Marie Carolan turned up for the event, where she picked the winner of a brand new Ford Focus, with Seán Doherty from Ceathrú Thaidhg being the lucky winner. Pamela O’Donnell from Attycunane, Belmullet, won the second prize of a 40-inch television.

The Rose of Carrandine 2008, who was crowned last Saturday night in an awards ceremony held in Manulla Community Centre, was Mary Louise McDonald from Facefield, Barnacarroll. Mary Louise was selected from 14 roses aged between 17 and 21 years from Mayo and Galway to become the ninth Rose of Carrandine.

Mayo Intercultural Action, a voluntary organisation that provides support to the county’s immigrant population, is in the running to receive one of this year’s Media and Multicultural Awards (MAMAs). The MAMAs, now in their seventh year, recognise the people, groups, companies, institutions and media platforms that promote diversity and multiculturalism in Ireland and the awards ceremony will take place in Dublin on Thursday November 27.

This monthly meeting of Mayo County Council saw the Fine Gael members of the council launch a scathing attack on the recent budget cutbacks. The remarks of the majority side of the house saw a number of Fianna Fáil councillors admit that they themselves were not happy with the budget. Achill-based Cllr Michael McNamara told the meeting that “there are some aspects of the the budget that I can’t defend”. While Claremorris area councillor Pat McHugh said “I have been a loyal supporter of the Government, but I’m not afraid to say there is no way I can defend this budget. There are many issues that have been raised, and they were discussed at meetings of Fianna Fáil councillors around the country, and a number of areas where a hatchet was used when a scalpel should have been.”

Castlebar Town Councillor Eugene McCormack said that the conviction of Mayo County Council in the District Court last week for a sewage leak into the Castlebar River was “unacceptable” and “embarrassing”, during a meeting of the Water Supply and Sewerage SPC this week.
