Government has let Mayo people down on Turf ban

Mayo Sinn Féin TD has hit out at the government and TDs in Mayo for 'pushing through a ban on turf as we face into winter during and a cost-of-living crisis'.

Deputy Conway-Walsh said: “Sinn Féin brought forward a motion to scrap the turf ban back in April that Fianna Fail and Fine Gael TDs in Mayo voted against despite claiming to oppose the ban. It was another example of some TDs playing opposition in the constituency and voting with government up in Dublin.

Worthy winners to be honoured at Mayo People awards

Fifteen individuals and groups will be honoured at the 28th Mayo People of the Year Awards gala function in Breaffy House Hotel, Castlebar, on Friday November 11. The event is organised annually by Mayo Rehab, Mayo County Council, and The Connaught Telegraph, with the funds going to the provision of services for Mayo Rehab. The function will be compered by Teresa O’Malley of Midwest Radio and Henry Mcglade of iMayo TV and music on the night will be provided by the Brose Walsh Band.

Castlebar councillors recommend sale of old library

A resolution to recommend that Mayo County Council dispose of the old Castlebar library by selling to a private buyer, was agreed by Castlebar councillors this week - with just one dissenting voice, Cllr Michael Kilcoyne. The matter will now go back before Mayo County Council for approval by members.

The land in question was purchased by Mayo County Council circa 1939 for £250 for the purposes of providing a library building, which opened in November 1942 and operated as the County library up to the early 2000s before relocating to a larger premises at John Moore Road, Castlebar. The property was fully vacated in 2007.

Nobody has a clue what’s happening in county town - say councillors

A sense of bafflement pervaded the October meeting of Castlebar MD on Wednesday afternoon last, in which several local councillors said they really had no clue what is going on in the town - and even a government TD didn’t know what was going on either.

The information deficit was highlighted by Cllr Donna Sheridan, who raised the matter of a third international refugee protection centre tipped to open at the Breaffy House Resort today (Friday), saying: “I have no information on the number of Ukrainians coming in or refugees from other countries to Castlebar but I hear we have a third international protection centre opening in this town now.
