Ballina Town Council to meet again on new tenant purchase scheme

The elected members of Ballina Town Council will meet again before approving a new tenant purchase scheme for long standing tenants. The new scheme, which will run hand in hand with the existing scheme, will see tenants who have more than 10 years of tenancy with the local authority get up to a 45 per cent discount on purchasing their home. This new scheme will run alongside the existing scheme from 1995 which saw tenants being able to avail of up to a 30 per cent discount on purchasing their homes.

Tonnes of litter dumped next to Ceide Fields

A large scale clean-up operation had to be undertaken next to one of the county’s top beauty and tourist spots — which included the deployment of an abseiling team — Ballina District Court heard on Tuesday.

Environmental officer with Mayo County Council Liam Rabbitte outlined that a complaint was made about illegal dumping at a site at Glenurla, Ballycastle, where 1.34 tonnes of litter had been dumped over a cliff face. The site is visible from the historic Ceide Fields.

I’ll be coming to Ireland in three months, Obama tells Kenny

US President Barack Obama has confirmed to Taoiseach Enda Kenny, at a St Patrick’s Day reception in the White House, that he is to visit Ireland in May and it is hoped that he will come west as part of that trip. Former US President John F Kennedy visited Galway during his reign in office in 1963 and Galway City councillor Padraig Conneely extended the same invitation to President Obama during a visit to the US in 2009.
