Rural broadband scheme welcomed but concerns over quality and speed

The Western Development Commission has this week welcomed the Government’s commitment to providing a universal broadband scheme to all areas, but Mayo Fianna Fáil TD Dara Calleary has expressed serious concerns that the scheme omits those with unacceptably low level of service.

“Without broadband access, companies are at a competitive disadvantage,” said Deirdre Frost of the WDC. “This scheme recognises the importance of broadband for all parts of the country and its role in enabling rural enterprises to develop and create jobs. For businesses in remote areas, once they have broadband, they have direct access to international markets.”

Council still owed millions by central Government

The issue of the amount of money owed by central Government to Mayo County Council for works carried out by the council was raised again this week at the monthly meeting of Mayo County Council. Cllr Eugene Lavin brought up the issue asking Peter Duggan, head of finance for Mayo County Council, how much money was owed and how much the council had to pay in relation to interest charges on loans that it has had to take out to cover the debt.

Research reveals road deaths halved over last decade

Research announced by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) and An Garda Síochána has revealed that road deaths dropped by 48 per cent over the last decade. The announcement came as the RSA, An Garda Síochána, Local Authority Road Safety Officers and PARC Road Safety Group marked the global launch of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020. The research, which analyses road deaths and serious injuries during the 10-year period 2001 to 2010, also revealed a drop of 58 per cent in the number of serious injuries sustained on Irish roads.

Burke to attend function with the queen

Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Cllr Michael Burke, will attend a function at the British embassy in Dublin during Queen Elizabeth’s visit. Cllr Burke told the monthly meeting of the local authority this week that he had received an invitation from the British embassy to the event to be held next week. The members of the council gave their approval for the Cathaoirleach to attend.
