Fourth year Trinity College student Rebecca Kilkelly from Castlebar presented the royal visitor with an arrangement of native Irish flowers during her visit to Trinity College on Tuesday afternoon.

Ballina bus bomber fails to spoil Queen’s visit

While Queen Elizabeth II’s historical visit to Ireland is coming to an end today, events last Monday night could have put the whole trip in jeopardy.

A bomb was found on a bus which had departed Ballina last Monday night and was on its way to Dublin city centre. The 17.45 Bus Éireann service was being operated by a private contractor on behalf of Bus Éireann. The Fianna Fáil spokesperson on Justice, Equality and Defence Dara Calleary has expressed his shock and concern at the bomb discovery. “Those behind this senseless criminal act have put the lives of innocent people at risk,” he said. “This is not about misguided ideology, it is a direct attack on the safety of ordinary people trying to go about their daily business.”

Fine for man who grew cannabis plant in his wardrobe

A 28-year-old Castlebar man was ordered to pay €150 to Down Syndrome, Ireland after he was found in possession of one cannabis plant he was growing in a wardrobe in his home. Garda William Grant told Castlebar District Court that on the basis of confidential information he received, he obtained a search warrant and searched the home of Mark Jones, 50 Lakeview, Castlebar, on September 7 2010. After carrying out the search he found one cannabis plant with a value of €100 and cannabis valued at €3.27 in the house. Garda Grant told the court that the cannabis was for Jones’s own use and he co-operated with the search throughout.
