Starting on July 29, Westport will take part on Fiver Fridays, a campaign which was initiated on Liveline with Joe Duffy. The idea is that €5 spent by four million people is €20million spent in the local economy.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny saw his approval ratings rise by 16 points in an Irish Times/MRBI poll which was published yesterday. The Islandeady-native has seen his satisfaction rating as Fine Gael leader go from 37 points to 53 points since the last poll was taken in February. The publication of the poll which was taken of 1,000 voters across the country between last Friday and Monday came on the heels of the Taoiseach’s speech in the Dáil on Wednesday afternoon in relation to the Cloyne Report.

Mayo Government TD, John O’Mahony has discovered that it can take up to 14 months for appeals to be processed by the Department of Social Protection. Now, Deputy O’Mahony, is calling on the Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton, TD, to redeploy staff to the department to speed up the process.

The AA is reminding motorists driving on rural routes this summer to keep an eye out for all creatures great and small having learnt through their latest motor insurance poll that approximately four out of 10 drivers in Ireland have run over a pet or other non domesticated animal at some point while driving. Out of 248 motorists in Mayo polled, 42.9 per cent have run over a pet or an animal.

A Lithuanian man who was arrested by Gardai for pubic order offences and told Gardai to “f**k off” and that he would “not go to Garda station” and then said he couldn’t speak English in court was given a three month prison sentence in Claremorris District Court this week.

A Castlebar man was given a three month driving ban and fined €170 by Judge Mary Devins in Claremorris District Court this week. Garda Ray Guilfoyle told the court that he stopped John Carty of 46 White Horse Lane, Turlough Road, Castlebar at 10.30am in Ballindine East, Ballindine for driving using a mobile phone.
