Ballinrobe native knifed to death in Salthill stabbing

The man who was fatally stabbed in Galway last weekend is believed to be a Ballinrobe native, originally from the High Street area of the town. The Mayo Advertiser also understands that the deceased has relatives still living in the area, although he spent decades residing in the USA himself.

Kevin Joyce (59), who was stabbed several times at an apartment complex in Salthill during the bank holiday weekend, bled to death, a sitting of Galway District Court heard on Tuesday.

Highest level of rain fell in Mayo in July

It is hardly surprising that statistics from Met Éireann show that Mayo has had a dismal summer, in fact it had recorded the highest level of rainfall in the country for July as well as the having the lowest level of sunshine.

One hundred and fourteen millimetres of rain fell at Ireland West Airport Knock during July — the highest rain level recorded of all weather stations in the country. The highest level of daily rainfall also fell at the same weather station — 34.9mm on July 6.

Grandparents gearing up for Knock pilgrimage

Preparations are under way for the annual National Grandparents Pilgrimage to Knock Shrine on Sunday September 11. Upwards of 15,000 pilgrims are expected to Knock on one of the shrine’s busiest days of the year. Archbishop Michael Neary from Tuam will celebrate Mass at 3pm, which will be preceded by the Anointing of the Sick at 2pm and followed by the Rosary.
