RNLI pays tribute to Mayo volunteers

Tributes were paid to volunteer members of Mayo RNLI at the annual RNLI Ireland awards which took place at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham in Dublin in recent days.

At the event, Declan Long, treasurer of the Ballina branch, was presented with a Bronze Badge, with tributes paid to him for his ‘meticulous record keeping’ and for his honest and trustworthy character.

O’Mahony welcomes €154,000 for Curam Family & Social Centre Claremorris

Mayo Fine Gael TD John O’Mahony has welcomed the announcement by Phil Hogan, Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government, that he has given sanction for South West Mayo Development Company Limited to approve funding of €154,788.71 to Claremorris Social & Family Centre Ltd (Cúram) for the construction of a 1,400sq ft extension to its facility. The extension will include a counselling room, family support room, office interview rooms, reception, and toilet facilities at the Curam Family & Social Centre Building, Claremorris, under the Basic Services for the Economy and Rural Population measure of the Rural Development Programme 2007-2013.

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny is still waiting on a report from Minister for Health Dr James Reilly on the future of the Sacred Heart Hospital. The Taoiseach stated this week: “I haven’t seen any report in respect of the Sacred Heart Hospital yet but what I understand is the Sacred Heart Hospital and before that the County Home in their own way and in their own time did magnificent work in respect of the provision of facilities for the people. And the staff who worked there over the years, the many staff, some long since gone, gave the best, but times have changed.”

Medical cover to continue at Sacred Heart Hospital but future of facility still causing concern

Mayo Fine Gael TD, John O’Mahony, has moved to allay fears over the future of medical cover at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Castlebar but concerns are still being expressed regarding the future of the facility.

In a statement this week, Deputy O’Mahony said he has learned that an agreement has been reached for consultant physicians from Mayo General Hospital to ensure medical cover is provided for the Sacred Heart Home when the consultant currently based there takes leave of absence for one year from next month.
