Mayo transplant woman pays tribute to her donor in Run for a Life

Just nine months after her life changing kidney transplant, Regina Hennelly, from Manulla, Co Mayo, will pay tribute to her deceased donor by taking part in the Irish Kidney Association’s Run for a Life. Regina will participate in the charity fundraiser which promotes organ donation and will take place at Park West Business Park, Dublin 12, on Saturday, October 13 commencing 12 noon.

Family fun day in Claremorris

A family fun day is taking place in Claremorris Athletic Club this Sunday, October 7, from 2pm to 5 pm. Communities with origins from DR Congo, Lithuania, Latvia, Ireland, Nigeria, Myanmar, Russia, Poland, and the Philippines will get together to showcase their traditional food, craft, music, and sport. It is a fantastic opportunity to get to know other people and make friends with people from all over the world living in our communities.

The charity chair auction, which takes place on November 16 in Breaffy House Hotel is an optional black tie event offering a great opportunity to dust down those evening dresses, call your friends, buy a table and have a great time. Hospice thanks for coffee morning

Mayo Roscommon Hospice thanks sincerely all the individuals, clubs, businesses, schools, etc, which hosted coffee mornings/evenings on their behalf on National Coffee Morning for Hospice. Grateful thanks to Bewleys which sponsored the coffee and all who supported the event so generously in each area. Special thanks to Midwest radio for its great efforts in organising the coffee morning in the Royal Theatre again this year, and to all the entertainers who gave their time free of charge to help make the day such a great success. Thanks to the generosity of the public the amount raised at the event came to the wonderful sum of €13,250. All funds raised will help the foundation to continue to provide palliative care services free of charge to those in need in the community. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Every three hours a woman in Ireland is diagnosed with breast cancer

Today, Friday October 5 the Irish Cancer Society is calling on everyone in Mayo to get together and support Get the Girls Day by buying and wearing a pink ribbon to help raise awareness and fund the society’s cancer projects and support services.

Last year volunteers across the country raised a fantastic €730,000 and this year the Irish Cancer Society is hoping to raise even more money for people who are affected by breast cancer. Latest data shows that 2,671 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in 2010, 63 cases in Mayo. It is estimated that women have a one in 10 chance of developing breast cancer during their lifetime.

Keelogues woman to run New York marathon for Mayo Rape Crisis Centre

Trish Reddington from Keelogues, Castlebar, will be running in the New York City Marathon, the biggest race in the world, on November 4 to raise funds for Mayo Rape Crisis Centre. Trish, a former Mayo county footballer took up running while living in New York City. A member of New York Road Runners Club until she moved home in October 2011, Trish only began running in 2008. She has since completed six half marathons and two Olympic size New York City triathlons in 2009 and 2010, where she helped raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of New York City.

An Taoiseach to make special delivery to Castlebar primary school

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny will be making a special delivery of high viz vests to junior infants in St Peter’s National School, Snugborough, Co Mayo, next Monday, October 8 at 9.15am.

This marks the first day of Irish Road Safety Week which is taking place from Monday October 8 to Sunday October 14. The high vis vests are being delivered to every child starting school this year as part of a Road Safety Authority (RSA) and Electric Ireland campaign.

Taking place for the first time in the beautiful harbour of Killary on October 13, competitors will experience the thrill of open water swimming in Ireland’s only fjord - this is sure to be a brilliant challenge for participants of all abilities from beginners to regular tri-athletes. And, there is €2,000 in cash prizes for competitors on the day.

They will speak of how they are trying to cope and face into the future. The get-together is on Wednesday October 10 starting at 7.30pm.

Cleveland Hermit Club for Achill students

The itinerary for the Achill delegation travelling to Cleveland on October 10 has been finalised and will see a roller-coaster six days, the pinnacle of which will be the Annual Mayo Cleveland Ball attended by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny TD.

In the build-up to the ball the Achill delegation will be busy attending several receptions and one key event will be a performance with the conductor of the world renowned Cleveland Pops Orchestra in the Hermit Club, a private members club with a strong tradition of supporting the performing arts.

Castlebar benefits from €1.4m BMW Regional Assembly grant

The fourth payment totalling €267,785 has been issued to Mayo County Council by the Border, Midland and Western (BMW) Regional Assembly towards the Castlebar town centre regeneration project. This project has revitalised Castlebar through a programme of town centre regeneration and streetscape refurbishment. Also this grant has facilitated the development of a riverside walk developing Castlebar’s amenity corridor.
