Early Childhood Ireland wrote to senators regarding Minister Joan Burton’s sick pay proposal ahead of Minister Richard Bruton’s address to the Seanad this week. It warned: “This flawed sick pay proposal would be fatal for jobs in the childcare sector if implemented, forcing half of Ireland’s crèches and preschools out of business and driving thousands of people onto the dole queue. Minister Richard Bruton must face up to the anti jobs nature of this dangerous proposal.”

The Great Western Greenway, County Mayo, has been awarded the Irish Environment Award of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM ). The award was presented to Mayo County Council by John Casey, chairperson of the Republic of Ireland branch of the CIWEM, at a reception in Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin, on Friday November 23.

New research by safefood for its Cut Food Waste campaign has revealed that 32 per cent of consumers believe ‘best before’ and ‘use by’ dates on food labels mean the same thing. The research also revealed that 44 per cent of consumers know there is a difference between the two but are unsure which is which.

Mayo Fianna Fail Deputy Dara Calleary has raised the serious problem with the upsurge in the number of burglaries which are taking place in Mayo over the past two months which has caused “genuine fear across the county”. The deputy, who raised the matter in the Dáil on Tuesday, has called on the Minster for Justice, Alan Shatter, to engage with the Garda Commissioner, Martin Callinan, “immediately” in relation to the increase in numbers of robberies across the region.
