HSE West members vote to defer public inquiry into Savita death

Two members of the HSE West regional forum were unsuccessful in their calls for an independent public inquiry into the tragic death of Savita Halappanavar at University Hospital Galway in October at a meeting of the forum this week. The motion was tabled by Clare county councillor Brian Meaney and seconded by Galway city councillor Catherine Connolly.

Director of Services for Mayo County Council, Martin Keating, informed the members of the Housing Strategic Policy Committee of Mayo County Council of this assessment at their November meeting this week.

The issue of housing Traveller families came up at the November meeting of the housing SPC of Mayo County Council this week. Both Cllr Gerry Ginty and Cllr Eddie Staunton brought up the issue at Thursday morning’s meeting. Director of services for Mayo County Council, Martin Keating, told the members: “We will be having a meeting of the local Traveller consultative committee in December to review the progress we have made this year and will report to this SPC in the new year.”

On Monday next, December 3 at 7pm, Achill Local Area Network on Violence Against Women will be officially launched in Achill Library. This community based network is made up of a range of support services for women experiencing violence, along with community representatives and individuals in the Achill area; all who want to raise awareness of and create a community response to the issue of violence against women.
Co-ordinator of Corr Acla CDP, Genevieve Grealis, commented: “We are delighted to facilitate the launch of this network. Violence against women is a hidden issue that affects approximately one in five women across all sectors of all communities, so it is vital that we develop a community led response to tackle the problem.”

Sinn Féin councillor Thérèse Ruane has expressed her disappointment that the Community Employment Scheme based at the Davitt Museum in Straide will cease today, Friday, November 30. She is appealing to the Davitt committee to reverse this decision to ensure that the museum can remain open and that the jobs of 21 workers can be saved and that the legacy of Michael Davitt be kept alive in the place of his birth.

There were 582 applications received by Mayo County Council this year for grants for the mobility aid grant and housing adaptation grants and housing aid for the older people. Of those applications, the council has been able to approve all qualified applicants who had submitted their applications up till the end of June this year.
