Achill Island and Louisburgh longlisted as Best Place to Holiday in Ireland

Achill Island and Louisburgh have made it on to the longlist in The Irish Times’ competition The Best Place to Holiday in Ireland. It will join 23 other holiday hotspots in the race to be named as Ireland’s best place to holiday. The other finalists include Dingle, Inis Meain and The Shannon River. Every county in the country was represented in the competition, with over 1,400 entries submitted in total by members of the public. Westport 5k run, jog, and walk on May 12

Planning is now at an advanced stage for the Westport 5k run, jog, and walk, which takes place at Westport Quay on Sunday May 12. All proceeds from this event will go towards the Quay School and a large entry is expected. While there will be a competitive aspect to the 5k race, a huge number of participants are expected to jog and walk at a more leisurely pace.

Senator Mark Daly outlines details of property tax to Castlebar meeting

More than 100 people were in attendance at the Fianna Fáil property tax public information meeting in the Welcome Inn Hotel, Castlebar, on Monday night.

The meeting was organised by Fianna Fáil local area representative, Lisa Chambers, who invited Senator Mark Daly, a qualified auctioneer and valuer, to give the presentation.

South West Mayo Development Company chair welcomes LEADER funding release

South West Mayo Development Company chairman Michael Biggins has welcomed the announcement by the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government Phil Hogan, that LEADER programme funding is to be released. The programme was embargoed since February 7 while Department officials conducted an audit of the level of project activity in all the local development companies. Reductions to the rate of co-funding meant that the original project allocations given to each local development company needed to be reduced.

Three Mayo women, Sinn Féin councillor Rose Conway-Walsh, Fianna Fáil local area representative for Westport Joan Geraghty and Fianna Fáil local area representative for Castlebar Lisa Chambers have attended Ireland’s first political campaign school EQUIP run by Women for Election in Athlone. The national organisation provides training and support to women from all backgrounds interested in a career in politics. Women for Election brought 20 women from various political parties and backgrounds from across Ireland to complete the three day residential programme.

Lord of the Dance star helps Manchester troupe stage reunion for Mayo Gathering

The Manchester based multi award-winning Irish dancer; James Keegan who is one of the principal dancers of the world-famous Lord of the Dance show is just one of the stars who has confirmed his appearance at a special Young, Gifted & Green (YGG) reunion concert for the Manchester-Mayo Gathering. The special event will take place on Friday, August 2 at the prestigious Ballina Arts Theatre in County Mayo, Ireland. It will feature performances from former members of YGG and the Keegan Academy of Irish Dance, along with a host of special guests from Manchester and performers from Mayo which include the Atlantic Rhythm Production company and Carmel Gunning. The group is still looking for other performers and companies from Mayo who would like to get involved with the event.

Tony Hennigan, one of the organisers of the event and the creative director of the troupe which was based at St Bede’s College, said: “The idea for the reunion came from Louise Keegan who was the group’s choreographer and now has her own Irish Academy with her brother James. They have already been in touch with a number of former members who are scattered around the globe. We want to try and trace as many of the hundreds of performers and special guests that have been involved with group over the last 15 years.
