During an update on procurement for Mayo County Council, the authority’s procurement officer John Maughan laid out his credentials and qualifications at the June meeting of the council, following on from criticism of him at a previous meeting. Maughan told the meeting, “I’ve been working in procurement for five years and I don’t set the prices. My role is to oversee the information and ensure we have fair and honest competitions for all.” He went on to say that, “ I applied through an open competition for the job. I’ve a degree in economics and political science, I was involved in procurement in the army in my time there and I’ve undertaken a certificate in procurement and a diploma in emergency planning.”

The Sacred Heart Hospital in Castlebar will be brought up to HIQA standards in time for the 2015 deadline, following the announcement on Wednesday that €11 million was being sanctioned for the necessary refurbishment works by the HSE. An Taoiseach Enda Kenny has welcomed the announcement that the hospital has now been included in the HSE's Capital Programme.

Claremorris will be alive with excitement on Friday evening, June 14, as Western Lakes Cycling Club promote a criterium (crit) bike road race in the town centre of Claremorris. The circuit will be a 1.3km lap around the town centre incorporating a finish in the Square. Several primes (sprints) will be held during the race with live commentary throughout.
