Adoption of Sinn Fein car-pooling motion welcomed

Sinn Féin councillor Thérèse Ruane has welcomed the backing of Castlebar Town Council for her motion tabled at the November meeting, that any councillors must car pool or use public transport when travelling to conferences. The Deputy Mayor is also calling for a freeze on councillors attending conferences in 2011 and for the savings to be allocated to the amenities budget to benefit community groups in the town.

Mayo schools to receive high tech equipment grants

Twenty seven post primary schools around Mayo are to receive further funding of some €2.6 million in grants for high tech equipment, according to local Fianna Fáil TD and Minister for State, Dara Calleary. The funding is being made available as part of the Government’s strategy to make technology an integral part of the learning process.

The weather didn’t suit the Australian rugby players on Tuesday evening but thankfully Munster gave us something to cheer about while the prospective loss of our economic sovereignty was hovering at the back of our minds. The long and the short is that we have made a complete mess of being a sovereign nation and while we can blame the politicians, the bankers, the Church, basically all the people we used to put faith in, the sad reality is that we all share the responsibility. We are the ones who elect politicians and we are the ones who lobby them to put parish pump politics ahead of the good of the country, naively believing that the satisfaction of our own greed will bring us security. Personal greed, and perhaps a neurotic fear of poverty, has brought us to the brink of bankruptcy. It has also prevented us developing a robust social conscience when it comes to paying taxes to ensure quality public services.

A Knock man was disqualified for four years for dangerous driving at Claremorris District Court this week, but had a drink driving charge against him dismissed by Judge John Coughlan. Ivan Merrick, Ballyhowley, Knock, had pleaded not guilty to both the dangerous driving and drink driving charge.
