Barrett renews calls for Knock airport to scrap departure charge for children

Labour Party councillor Harry Barrett has renewed calls on Ireland West Airport Knock to drop the development charge for passengers, in light of the reduction in airport taxes announced in the budget. He is asking that management should begin by scrapping the €10 charge on children between the ages of 12 and 18 years.

Ruane hits out at fellow councillors for failing to support accessibility motion

At last week’s Castlebar Town Council meeting, Sinn Féin councillor Therese Ruane put forward a motion calling for all future meetings of the council to take place in a venue with access for disabled people. The councillors voted by seven votes to two against the motion, ensuring that future meetings of Castlebar Town Council will continue to take place in a venue that is inaccessible to the people with reduced mobility. The only councillor to support the motion was Labour's Harry Barrett.

New storm water tank given the go ahead at Bachelor’s Walk

A new storm water attenuation tank at Bachelor’s Walk in Ballina was given the go ahead by the elected members this week at the monthly meeting of Ballina Town Council. The new tank was proposed by Fianna Fáil councillor Johnny O’Malley and seconded by Fine Gael councillor Barry McLoughlin following a debate on the potential hazards of effluent getting into the Moy.

Major funding boost for Jackie Clarke collection announced

Before the start of the December meeting of Ballina Town Council this week, Mayor Frances McAndrew welcomed the news that Fáilte Ireland has given the go ahead for €1.05 million in funding for the Jackie Clarke Library and collection in the town. The library which is homed in the old provincial bank in the town is tipped to become a major tourist attraction for the north Mayo town when it is opened at the end of next year.
