River in Westport not damaged from oil spill

The Carrowbeg River has not been damaged following a large oil spill in the town last week, after an oil container located at the old site of Northern Feather, and where the new Lidl store will be located, was ruptured.

Running legend McKiernan to launch Race2Glory

Irish running legend Catherina McKiernan is coming to Kiltimagh to launch the inaugural Race2Glory Kiltimagh competition, which is taking place on Saturday July 16. Members of the public are invited to attend a question and answers session with Catherina McKiernan on Monday February 21 at 4pm at the Park Hotel Kiltimagh. Higgins calls for 112 number to be put on emergency vehicles

Jim Higgins MEP this week pleaded with the powers that be in the emergency services to begin emblazoning the 112 emergency number on the side of Garda cars, ambulances, and fire engines. Speaking in Strasbourg where he was discussing the EU 112 Day which took place last Friday, he noted Ireland’s poor showing in the euro barometer results on awareness of the EU’s 112 number.

Man was selling drugs to help his mother out financially

Judge Mary Devins adjourned her decision against a Claremorris man who pleaded guilty to possession of drugs for sale and supply this week. Julius Silkaitis, 18 Claremount Manor, Knock Road, Claremorris, pleaded guilty to the charges in court and told the court that he was selling the drugs to make some money so it would be easier on his mother, who was supporting herself and him on social welfare at the time. Garda Ciaran McGrath told the court that he carried out a search on Silkaitis’ home on December 9 2009 at 18 Claremont, Claremorris. He found 18.65gms of cannabis herb divided into 22 bags in the defendant’s room with a value of €400.
