Man found with four cannabis plants

A Claremorris man who was found in possession of four cannabis plants was ordered to pay €200 towards Mayo Mountain Rescue by Judge Mary Devins.

The court was told that Garda Russell Gibbons searched the home of Dylan Joyce at Bariel, Claremorris, Co Mayo at 6.30pm on August 1 2009 and in the search he found four cannabis plants with a value of €1,200. Joyce told the gardaí on the night in question the plants were his and for his own personal use.

Heston questions length of time Newtown traffic lights were out

At the monthly meeting of Castlebar Town Council last week, Fine Gael councillor Noreen Heston raised the issue of why the traffic lights in Newtown were out of order for so long. Cllr Heston told the meeting: “It is an important issue, I know it’s a county council matter, but the lights were left out of order for a very long time and there were a number of accidents there. There should have been a member of the Gardaí or a traffic warden placed at the lights because it was very dangerous.” Cllr Heston said that she had been in contact with the gardaí about the issue and was told that it was a matter of resources that they couldn not post someone there all the time, while the council said it was a similar issue for them.

€40,000 for Claremorris Golf Club entrance

A sum of €40,000 has been allocated from Mayo County Council’s Low Cost Safety Fund for improvement works at the entrance junction to Claremorris Golf Club. The works will help to alleviate what has been described as the “dangerous situation that exists there for many years”.
