N5 preferred route gets approval from Westport councillors

While controversy surrounded the proposed preferred route of the Westport to Bohola dual carriageway in the Castlebar area, with the Murphy family home in Doogarry, Breaffy, to be demolished to accommodate the road, members of the Westport Electoral Area Committee this week proposed that the 40km type two dual carriageway route be given the go ahead.

Well thankfully last week we had a most welcome diversion from the ongoing tale of woes about the economy and all those poor public servants getting hit with levies, thank God for Punxsutawney Phil. He took our minds off that shite for a week. Phil is a groundhog: he’d be a swanky well-fed distant relative of our own humble, prickly, depressed-looking Irish hedgehog. A hedgehog that took the boat during the bad times did well for himself in America and turned his prickly coat into something more exotic.

Cancer the main cause of death and illness claims in Mayo

Cancer remains the main cause of specified illness and death benefit claims in Mayo, according to the latest figures from Irish Life, the country’s largest provider of life assurance and specified illness cover. The Irish Life figures show that cancer accounted for 60 per cent of specified illness claims and death benefit in Mayo in 2008 while heart conditions accounted for 20 per cent of claims.

A man who appeared on the court list for Claremorris this week under two different names was convicted and fined for motoring offences and criminal damage. Peteris Liseckis, who also goes by Janis Tisanous, of 4 College Road, Boyle, Co Roscommon, pleaded guilty to all charges in court.
