Head shop protest organised for Castlebar this Wednesday

Arising from a proposal by the Mayor of Castlebar Cllr Michael Kilcoyne at last Thursday night’s meeting of Castlebar Town Council, that consideration should be given to the holding of a protest outside the two head shops in Castlebar, it was unanimously agreed by the members that a protest should be arranged as a matter of urgency, given the strong local opposition to these shops, situated as they are so close to two of the local secondary schools and two of the primary schools in the town.

Council paid out €13m to technical staff in 2008

Mayo County Council employs 188 technical staff which cost the council €13 million in wages in 2008, according to independent Councillor Frank Durcan. The councillor brought up the figures while the council was discussing the NRA roads’ budget and the effects the cold weather after Christmas had on the roads network in the county. Cllr Durcan was hitting out at what he saw as “bad management” by the council executive, which combined with a recent drop in funding from the Government he said was hurting the council’s finances.

Free Saturday parking
A Fine Gael councillor is looking for free parking in the towns of Ballinrobe and Claremorris on Saturdays. Cllr Patsy O’Brien tabled a notice of motion at the Claremorris electoral area committee this week making the request but decided to submit the motion as a submission during the Pay and Display review which is taking place in March.

Barrett supports skate park for Castlebar

An online petition with more than 40 signatures has called on Castlebar Town Council and Mayo County Council to provide a skate park for the young people of Castlebar. The organisers have pointed to the skate parks already in existence in other towns around the country. Councillor Harry Barrett has rowed in behind the campaign and is promising to bring the issue up at future town council meetings.

But last Monday, Independent councillor Frank Durcan walked up to the top bench at the February meeting of Mayo County Council and left a copy of the Irish Constitution in front of county secretary John Condon, asking him where in the Constitution it refers to privacy.

Man assaulted in unprovoked attack in Ballina

A 20-year-old, who in an unprovoked attack hit a man in the face, was before Ballina District Court this week where he was given a one month prison sentence suspended for 12 months.
