Gaelforce Events, the organisers of the extremely popular Gaelforce West adventure race, are running a cycle challenge outside of Newport on June 19 and 20. The event includes a 24 hour and eight hour challenge open to soloists and teams of up to 10.

The proposed N5 linking Westport and Castlebar will not have a turn off for Islandeady on it because traffic movements does not justify it. At the May monthly meeting of Castlebar Electoral Area Committee it was reported that Islandeady had 800 recorded traffic movements in a survey was carried out last July, and the NRA requires 1,000 daily traffic movements to justify a turn off.

Fine Gael Leader, Enda Kenny, TD, has welcomed the Road Works Estimates from Castlebar Town Council for 2010. A total of €585,000 has been allocated toward improvements and maintenance around the town. From this funding, approximately €216,000 will be spent on 18 locations where improvement and installation works are required.

A Mayo school teacher has been busy distributing rosary beads to schools throughout the parish in a bid to generate hope in society. Ms Detta Molloy along with a team of volunteers have so far distributed almost 20,000 rosary beads with Rosary of Hope booklets. People are being asked to say a decade of the Rosary every day in May for their own special intention and children in particular are encouraged to take part.
