Campaign to call McHale Park stand after Tony McHugh

A new group on Facebook has been set up to call the new stand in McHale Park after the late Anthony McHugh. The page, which was set up during the week, has more than 450 members so far and was started following a discussion on the popular Castlebar website www.castlebar.ie, where posters called for the stand to be named after him.

The late Mr McHugh, who passed away in April, was one of the best known businessmen in the region and a lifelong supporter of numerous charities and sporting organisations. It was his company, Mountain View Securities, which built the new multi million euro stand at McHale Park.

Minister Pat Carey at the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht affairs has announced funding for a number of Mayo groups under the Scheme of Community Support for Older People.

Mayo beneficiaries are as follows: Fahy community alert, €200; Killasser community alert, €2,944; Knock West community alert, €2,327; Louisburgh Lecanvey community alert, €1,013; Newport neighbourhood watch, €1,272.

Ballindine break-ins
Two premises were broken into in the Ballindine area on Wednesday May 26 and Thursday May 27. The Ballindine Community Centre was entered through a back window, however nothing was taken. The Ballindine Health Centre was also entered around 2am. The alarm went off and nothing was taken.

Cutbacks deplored at Mayo General Hospital

Members of staff at Mayo General Hospital were informed this week that their working hours were being cut — some by as much as half. Cllr Michael Kilcoyne has condemned the cutbacks, claiming his sources have confirmed that there will be a total reduction of 80 beds at the hospital by year end, despite the HSE saying the figure will be around 30 beds.
