An Garda Síochána is appealing to all road users to slow down, be vigilant, wear a seatbelt, and never drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs this June bank holiday. Tragically, 89 people have lost their lives on Irish roads so far this year and six people have died in road traffic collisions during the last seven days (to May 31).

Flood works funding has just been announced for a number of Mayo areas. Funding of €45,000 has been allocated for Dookinelly, Achill Island, for the provision of an outlet open to the sea and for roadside drainage. Other grants approved include €31,500 for works at Derryguillinan, Cloghans, and €52,200 for works on Owenwee River, comprising €27,900 for the drainage of the river, the river weir, and for the provision of fencing, and €24,300 for the repair of a culvert, for road strengthening works, and for fencing.

The new pedestrian and vehicular access to Lough Lannagh from the Newport Road is causing problems, a town councillor has stated. A number of months ago, the town council constructed a small parking area at Lough Lannagh accessible from the Newport Road as part of the Riverside Enhancement Scheme. The access path in existence for years, which runs adjacent to Blackfort Manor, has been contributing to anti-social activities recently such as late-night parties and public drinking. As a result, the new parking and turnabout area has caused noise levels and public order incidents to increase at night causing distress to nearby local residents.

A Dunmore man who was just one milligram over the legal alcohol limit for driving was disqualified from driving for one year in Ballyhaunis District Court this week. Alan Murray, Kiltevna, Dunmore, Co Galway, was stopped by Garda Eoin O’Donnell at a mandatory roadside alcohol test at Hazel Hill’s, Ballyhaunis, at 2.16am on September 13 2009. Mr Murray took a roadside breath test which registered a fail and was arrested by Garda O’Donnell and brought to Castlebar Garda station where he handed custody over to Garda Declan Casey who conducted an intoxilyzer test on Murray, which returned a reading of 36mg of alcohol per 100 ml of breath.
