The deputy also condemned the cancellation of meeting which was scheduled to take place yesterday (Thursday) between Mayo deputies and HSE West management.

Independent councillor Michael Holmes has questioned what will be the outcome of the special meeting of Mayo County Council that will take place this coming Monday. The meeting was called by Cathaoirleach Cllr Cyril Burke at the request of seven Fianna Fail councillors to discuss the withholding of the money from the council because of the underpayment of the household charge in the county.

A number of councillors at the Belmullet Electoral Area Committee on Tuesday expressed their hope that LEADER funding that was previously provided by Meitheal Forbartha na Gaeltachta (MFG) would soon be back on stream. The calls came as the members were informed that the first two years of funding from the separate Communuity Gain Investment Fund is about to be allocated by Mayo County Council. That €8 millon fund is paid for by the developers of the Corrib Gas project as an obligation of their planning permission. However, councillors are concered that groups who are awarded this funding would not draw it down, as they are waiting to see whether they will also get funding from applications they made to MFG before it was closed two years ago so they can combine the funding to complete projects.

Mayo County Council has spent at least €200,000 more than it has earned from car parking charges since 2008, shock new figures reveal. The figures, released by Claremorris Chamber of Commerce ahead of crunch talks with the council on paid parking in Claremorris and Ballinrobe, show the local authority is on target to lose at least €40,000 this year alone.
