Mayo gardaí invite you to home security exhibition

As part of the Garda Supporting Safer Communities Campaign 2012, An Garda Síochána in Mayo is taking a proactive approach regarding crime prevention and is holding a home security exhibition on Saturday November 24 at The Park Hotel, Kiltimagh, from 10am to 5pm. Entry is free and John O’Mahoney TD will be opening the exhibition.

Martin calls for Sacred Heart to be retained and improved

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin will finish his two days of engagements in Mayo today, but yesterday as part of his visit to Castlebar, he spent over an hour in the Sacred Heart Hospital meeting with staff and patients and he called for action to be taken very quickly to ensure the hospital remains and is improved. Speaking to the press afterwards he said: “Firstly I was very impressed with the presentation I was given by the staff there. I was very impressed with the facility, particularly the rehab facility that was there. I think your fortunate to have a facility like the Sacred Heart that has a lot of potential”

Harkin calls on young people to enter Nobel Prize trip contest

Martin looks to new life in the party in Mayo

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin will wrap up his two day tour of Mayo today, with engagements in Ballina, Knock Airport, Claremorris, and Ballinrobe. In south Mayo he will meet with local representatives and current Galway West TD Eamon O Cuiv, who will see a large part of south Mayo come into his constituency. Speaking to the press yesterday, Martin was hopeful of seeing the party grow again in Mayo. “I remember when I was here last time, at a major meeting it was the strongest and largest crowd in numbers that turned out,” he said. “We have a strong councillor base, not what it was before, but it’s stronger than in a lot of other counties.

Swinford coucillors have not allocated €60,000 for local road improvements

Half of the Notice of Motion allocation money for the Swinford area for local road improvements in 2012 had not been allocated as of Tuesday of this week, it has emerged. Each county councillor that sits on Mayo County Council is given an allocation, known as a Notice of Motion allocation for improvement works to be carried on specific local roads as dictated by them, each year by Mayo County Council. This years adopted Roadwork’s Scheme for Mayo County Council, saw each of the 31 councillors in Mayo get allocated €30,000 for these Notice of Motion allocations, which the councillors had already approved in the yearly budgetary process. The councillors also get a allocation of €27,500 of a special allocation for surface dressing each year, and also up to this year were given an allocation for local improvement scheme (LIS) for use on private roads of constituents, which was removed by the Government to much anger of elected councillors.

County Mayo is strongly represented at this year’s Good Food Ireland Awards which will take place on Tuesday November 20 at The Shelbourne Hotel, Dublin. These awards celebrate the best of Irish food and focus on Irish ingredient-led cuisine and artisan food production. An Taoiseach Enda Kenny is guest of honour at this year’s awards, which will be hosted by RTÉ’s Mary Kennedy.

County councillors round on Durcan over fraud allegations

There was widespread condemnation of Independent Castlebar Cllr Frank Durcan by his fellow elected representatives this week after he laid a charge of “bare faced fraud” against county manager Peter Hynes at the November meeting of Mayo County Council. The firebrand councillor had taken to the floor of the chamber to speak on an item to approve an overdraft accommodation of €10 millon for Mayo County Council for 2013.
