An Port Mór in Westport has been crowned winner of Best Restaurant in Mayo at the Connacht regional final of the Santa Rita Irish Restaurant Awards 2013. The awards, which took place in The House Hotel in Galway this week named the top restaurants in Connacht for 2013.

Cllr Flynn thanked everyone involved with Rosmoney Pier pontoon for a great job done. The councillor said it was a great example of partnership by the council, Government agencies, and the local community.

Work will soon begin on a car park for the pier and Cllr Flynn welcomed this as he and Cllr Adams put substantial allocations towards this car park.

Flynn hits out at council’s procurement policies

As part of a wide ranging contribution on the overall financial state of Mayo County Council at its monthly meeting, Cllr Peter Flynn hit out at the procurement polices of the council and those responsible for running it. The Westport based Fine Gael councillor said: “We’ve John Maughan (procurement officer for Mayo County Council), who knows nothing about procurement. All he does is alienate people it seems. I spoke to one person who sourced all the supplies for their office from the one supplier in town (Castlebar). Now they have eight suppliers, eight purchase orders, eight different things to sign off on. It probably costs three times as much in the end.”

Taoiseach Enda Kenny welcomes new youth centre for Castlebar

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny has welcomed news of the sale, facilitated by Mayo County Council, of the old post office in Mountain View to the Castlebar Community Development Association (CCDA). The building will now be used as a youth centre from which Foróige and the Mayo Youth Mental Health Initiative (MYMHI) will offer a wide and varied range of services to the town.

Foróige services operating from the new site will include the Castlebar Neighbourhood Youth Project (NYP), a partnership between the HSE and Foróige providing support for young people experiencing personal, social, or educational difficulties, and the Big Brother Big Sister Community and Schools Mentorship Programmes. HSE support service The Edge will also be based in the new premises and it is hoped that a youth café will be established there. Foróige has almost 3,000 members in 55 clubs across Mayo.
