Funding available for non-profit organisations in Mayo

Coca-Cola Ireland today launched the 2013 Coca-Cola Thank You Fund (The Fund). The Fund, now in its third year, is once again making €125,000 available to eligible non-profit organisations on the island of Ireland. The fund is inviting applications from non-profit organisations, charities and community groups who are seeking support to develop new and innovative projects or initiatives that encourage communities to lead more balanced, healthy and active lives.

Kilmaine is to see an improvement in water quality in the area with the announcement this week that the Lough Mask regional water supply scheme is to be extended to the village. This will be funded as part of the Water Services Investment Programme 2010 to 2013 and it will allow for the construction of a water main from Ballinrobe to Kilmaine at a cost of €2.025 million. The funding will be awarded by the Minister for the Environment, Community, and Local Government Phil Hogan to allow Mayo County Council to advance the scheme to construction as soon as possible.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has welcomed news from the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil Hogan announcing revised allocations under the LEADER elements of the Rural Development Programme 2007-2013 which release the programme’s remaining €70 million for local development companies around the country. Of this €70 million, a total of €19,896,889 will be awarded to Mayo.

One hundred and sixty jobs have been maintained in the west as Ashford Castle, Cong, was sold this week following a global marketing process by joint receivers Ernst & Young and selling agent Savills. The new owner, Red Carnation Hotels, has exchanged contracts on the historic five star property and plans to operate the hotel as a leading branded hotel.

Fine Gael TD for Mayo, John O’Mahony, has received confirmation from Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton, that part-time fire-fighters will now be entitled to jobseeker's payments. Up to now, many retained fire-fighters were deemed ineligible for jobseekers on the grounds that they were not 'available for and seeking work'.

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring has today welcomed the announcement by The Arts Council of funding totalling €25,000 for several festivals and events in Mayo in 2013.
The five organisations to receive funding, for the period to the end of December 2013 are: Westport Arts Festival, €10,000; Classical Links, €4,500; Scoil Acla, €4,500; Feile Iorras, €3,000; and Ceol na Locha, €3,000.

There was full throated praise for all those involved in getting the new Garda monitored CCTV system in Ballina finally up and running at the May meeting of the local authority this week. At Tuesday night’s meeting Sgt Mandy Gaynor gave the elected members a full presentation on the system that currently has 18 linked up monitored cameras throughout the town, with four more to come on stream shortly and the possibility to add more later.

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring has announced funding of more than €591,000 for road works in County Mayo from his department, and €531,000 of matching funding will bring this figure to more than €1 million. There is a total of 33 projects in the list of regional and local roads.

Castlebar grandmother Catherine Wiley, who is the founder of the Catholic Grandparents Association, met Pope Francis at the Vatican last Sunday. Speaking after the meeting, Ms Wiley said, “I felt very blessed, honoured and emotional. I hope this will create awareness of the calling of grandparents and their vital role in society.”

At the May meeting of Ballina Town Council the elected members agreed to give €20,000 funding to Ballina Chamber of Commerce for the projects. The funding will be split equally over four different projects, the tourist office, the Halloween festival, the Christmas festival, and for promotions of Ballina. There was full backing from all the members of the council for the work being carried out by the chamber on these projects, in particular the tourist office, which all nine elected members said had been a huge success since the chamber took over the running of it.
The councillors also took some time to praise the work of the former CEO of the chamber, Sandra Cribben for her hard work over the years. The former CEO lost her job with the chamber as part of a rationalising programme carried out because of falling memberships and reduced revenues in organisation.
