Two young writers through to nationwide competition final

Two Mayo pupils used their love of science fiction, imagination, and top writing skills to beat off competition from some 10,000 budding novelists and claim a finalist place in the 2014 John West Fantasy Writing Competition.

Danny Newcombe, a sixth class student from Cooneal National School, Ballina, and Emily Nolan, a fifth-year student at Davitt College, Springfield, Castlebar, are both through to the final 21 writers remaining in the competition.

Irish Rail warns of high risk at two local level crossings

Two unmanned rail crossings in Mayo are the most dangerous in the country, recording between them more than 40 per cent of all the serious ‘near misses’ between trains and road users nationally.

Yesterday, Irish Rail officials were at Kilnageer Level Crossing, near Breaffy, to launch a nationwide campaign to raise awareness among road users of the dangers of the crossings.

Biopark controversy rears its head again in Claremorris

Controversy looks set to erupt again in Claremorris over plans to develop a combined heat and power (CHP) plant and biomedical facility - called a biopark - on the outskirts of the town.

The BioPark is back in the news following Councillor Richard Finn’s proposal to have the site, where planning for the project was previously overturned by An Bord Pleanala, rezoned for ‘opportunity development’ to boost the project’s chances of getting the go ahead.
