The Men’s Community Initiative at Áras Inis Gluaire

Coming up in September the centre has a busy schedule of activities planned for the autumn to winter season. Classes will include joint mobility and strength classes (an exercise group for the older man), walking football (a less intense way to play football), art in the afternoon (a painting and drawing class), beginners' computer classes for men, and computers for farming families. Dates and times for all are to be confirmed but bookings are now being taken as places are limited and will fill up fast. So don’t delay, get in touch and reserve your place now. If you are over 55 and have an idea for an activity that could be introduced to the programme, please do let them know. All suggestions and ideas are welcomed! Teenager who died in cash named

The 19-year-old who was killed in a single vehicle traffic collision last night at Carromore, near Ballinrobe has been named as Darragh Doherty from Ballyhenry, Kilmaine. Darragh who was a talented footballer was a member of Kilmaine GAA Club and was member of the 2013 Mayo minor team who claimed the All Ireland title. Darragh scored 1-2 in that win over Tyrone.

Castlebar Educate Together school plans to be open in time

The new Educate Together School in Castlebar, which is due to open on Tuesday September 1, will hopefully still open despite not having a home sorted out just 12 days before it's due to open, according to the group's regional development officer. The new Educate Together school for the town was announced in February of this year and would be the county's second such school after the opening of one in Ballina last year. The school had been given the old Burren National School outside the town as a home, but the building was deemed not up to the required standard by the Educate Together.

File being prepared for DPP following stabbing

Gardai are preparing a file for the DPP after a 54-year-old man was stabbed several times in his upper body in the early hours of Monday morning outside his home in Ballina.

The rain could not dampen the spirits of a very happy Co Mayo couple today, as they collected a cheque for half a million euro. The pair, who wish to keep the win private, won the prize in the EuroMillions Plus draw on Tuesday August 11.

Chambers hits out at latest Irish Water plans

Fianna Fáil General Election candidate for Mayo Cllr Lisa Chambers has described the planned creation of another new database for the flawed water conservation grant as another chapter in the never ending mess that is Irish Water. Data released under Freedom of Information has revealed that Department of the Environment has suggested the Local Government Management Agency could establish a new database of Irish Water customers and non-customers to be used by the Department of Social Protection to administer the grant from next year. The Department of Social Protection is now writing to households telling them they can now apply for the grant.

Two young Mayo farmers up for Young Farmer of the Year

The 2015 FBD Young Farmer of the Year competition will come to a close on September 1 when the winner will be announced at a banquet in the Twin Trees Hotel in Ballina. This year, for the first time, a representative from each enterprise sector could go through from every county. Thirty-nine young farmers got through to the semi-finals and from these, six finalists will compete for the top titles. The 17th annual FBD Young Farmer of the Year competition is run by Macra na Feirme in partnership with the IFA.

Taoiseach welcomes landing of new world class transatlantic fibre optic cable in Mayo

The west of Ireland is set to become a key telecommunications and data gateway over the coming months with the construction of a new transatlantic fibre optic cable system which will have the capacity to handle up to one third of the world’s telephone calls.  This follows the installation of the Irish portion of the cable in Killala, last Friday – the first time a cable of this type has been connected to the Western region.

Mayo Medical Academy to be completed this autumn

An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, this week has welcomed the news that the dean of the Mayo Medical Academy, consultant surgeon Dr Kevin Barry, has been promoted to the role of professor by NUIG. Dr Barry is the only consultant to have been appointed to this role outside of the staff of Galway University Hospital. The Taoiseach also said this week that the €2.2 million project which will house the academy on a permanent basis is expected to be completed within the next two months.

Whether you are an experienced hill walker or someone who just enjoys a casual stroll, Foxford is the place to be next weekend. Foxford Walking Festival takes place on Saturday August 29 and Sunday August 30, with this year’s festival coinciding with Foxford Riverfest which will provide a wide range of entertainment over the weekend. The Walking Festival comprises six organised walks led by experienced leaders. The walks are graded hard, moderate and easy to suit all levels of fitness. Appropriate clothing and footwear is, however, required.

CRC FM celebrates twenty years with big day out in The Mall

To celebrate 20 years of broadcasting from the county town, CRCfm, in association with Green Room Bookings, will host a massive free family day and artisan food festival on The Mall in Castlebar this Sunday August 23, followed by an evening of quality blues music. Johnny Gallagher and the Boxtie Band, Mississippi Sheiks and Rusty Jacks will rock the Mall from 6pm until 10pm. Castlebar has been synonymous with blues music since the days of the Castlebar Blues Festival, so huge crowds are expected as the genre returns to the big stage on The Mall.
