Is Mayo the lucky Lotto capital of the country?

The rain could not dampen the spirits of a very happy Co Mayo couple today, as they collected a cheque for half a million euro. The pair, who wish to keep the win private, won the prize in the EuroMillions Plus draw on Tuesday August 11.

They picked their own numbers at random when they bought the lucky €3 ticket in Careys, Main Street, Belmullet. The regular EuroMillions players are looking forward to making plans for their new windfall.

August has been a particularly lucky month for lottery players in Mayo. At the start of the month Ger Murphy from Ballinrobe won a Lotto jackpot of over €6.3 million. On Friday last a fellow Mayo man won a EuroMillions Match 5 + 1 Lucky Star prize of €206,764, last Friday's winner who wishes to keep the win private said: "I’m absolutely thrilled. Although I’m still struggling to believe that this has actually happened to me. I play the EuroMillions and Lotto every week but I never expected to win anything like this! I’m going to put some of my winnings towards starting a fund for my children’s education and paying off part of the mortgage. I’m also considering booking a family holiday to recover from all of this excitement!" He bought his ticket in Kellys Garage on the Mulranny Road in Newport with a €6 Quick Pick Play. Also winning big last Saturday was Rose Moran from Castlebar who won €18,000 on the Winning Streak TV gameshow.
