February festival of music and sport in Ballinrobe

London Classic Theatre brings its acclaimed production Humble Boy to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Wednesday February 11 at 8pm. Following up on last year’s superb production of Abigail’s Party, London Classic Theatre’s Humble Boy is an award-winning comedy with a delightful sting in the tail. Following the sudden death of his father, 35-year-old Felix Humble, a Cambridge academic, returns to his Middle England home and his difficult and demanding mother. After a chaotic funeral, and the disappearance of his father’s prized bees, it becomes clear to Felix that life at the Humble home will never be the same again. Past and present collide with love and uncertainty in this original and captivating play by Charlotte Jones, directed by Michael Cabot.

New Thursday night trad session at the TF Royal

This Thursday Night at the TF Royal Hotel sees the start of what is hoped to become one of the finest trad nights in Mayo. We are inviting all local musicians; traditional, Celtic rock, and bluegrass to come along and join us for this new night of a ‘Royal Seisiún’!

We kicked it off last Thursday at 9pm with a local Celtic rock and bluegrass band playing songs by The Horslips, Stockton’s Wing, bluegrass favourites, and their own original songs. All well-known established musicians, the band (who are still nameless — ideas welcome!) features Dave Howley (lead singer, mandolin, guitar), Mick Buckton, Tom Lyons, and Pete Lowry (guitars), Noel Walsh (bass guitar), Colin Walsh (drums), Tommy Doherty (accordion), Liam Molloy (flute), and Brian Scahill (banjo). These fantastic nine are bound to attract a large crowd, creating a buzzing and lively atmosphere suitable for both the young and old.

The Fuaim na Chunneagainai show is coming to the Castlecourt Hotel on the February 6 for one show only at 8.30pm sharp. Tickets will be on sale in the Castlecourt and the number for the Castlecourt Hotel is 098 25444. The host/MC for the night is Gerry Glennon. The singers include Orla Keane, Dessie O’Holleran, and Johnny Mairtin Larry McDonagh (well known sean nós singer and lilter). The band are Louise McKenny on flute, Jimmy Higgins on bodhrán, Tom Dorothy and John Holleran on accordion, Fiachra O’Regan on pipes, Sadhbh O’Flaherty on banjo, and Joe Gibson on fiddle and guitar.

Claremorris musical society to stage Annie

There is great excitement in Claremorris and its surrounding areas as Claremorris Musical Society put the final finishes to their forthcoming production of Annie. Annie will be the third annual production for Claremorris Musical Society. Set up in 2006, the society is growing ever since and is proving very successful in Claremorris and surrounding areas. Tonight the curtain will go up for the opening night of Annie and this well loved family musical will run over the weekend in The Town Hall, Claremorris.
