Paul Brady, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, is one of Ireland's most enduringly popular artists. Born and raised in Strabane, he was into a wide variety of music from an early age. A fifties child, his first sounds were the swing, jazz, and show tunes of his parents generation, then fifties rock 'n roll, sixties pop and Motown, blues, R’n’B, and country and western. Through all this ran the potent flavour of Irish traditional music and song.

The Priests, Father Eugene O’Hagan, Father Martin O’Hagan, and Father David Delargy, are currently taking the world by storm. Their debut album entered the Irish charts at number one and the UK charts at number five, making the Priests’ debut album the 'fastest-selling UK debut for a classical act' as certified by Guinness World Records.

The live entertainment continues once again next Saturday night the March 28 at Bar Ritz (Mulroy’s Bar) as the Finbar Hoban Presents… series continues to bring the most diverse and popular music groups to Castlebar. The first band to take to the stage will be 21 Outs at 9.15pm; their music is loud, honest, engaging and soulful with strong blues and grunge influences. All songs are arranged by front man Philip Cassidy, who at only 23 has been playing and performing live in venues across Ireland for the past nine years. The band formed in late July 2007. The band recorded their first EP in Temple Lane Studios of July last year. Temple Lane studios are among the top recording studios in Ireland with past clients including Elvis Costello, Van Morrison, Phil Lynott and Shane McGowan amongst others, so be sure to get there early as 21 Outs are sure to put on a blazing performance.

Get your own seat at the theatre

Ballina families are rushing to buy their seats for the new state-of-the-art theatre in Ballina Arts Centre of which building is due to start in August of this year. Except they are not buying seats for one show, but for all time. For €500 a seat will be named in honour of your family and for €1,000 you can also be named as a founding member, with your name added to a brass plaque in the foyer of the new building.

Literary brunch in aid of Ballina Arts Centre redevelopment

As part of the fund-raising efforts for the Ballina Arts Centre Redevelopment campaign, there will be a Meet the Author Brunch in the Downhill Hotel, tomorrow (Saturday) at 12 noon.

The event will be hosted by locally based authors Morag Prunty (who sometimes writes as Kate Kerrigan) and Helen Falconer, and will feature best-selling writers Claudia Carroll and Anita Notaro.
