New definition needed for retirement

With the 65 years of age cut-off point long associated with retirement now being called more into question as people continue to live and work longer, a new definition is now being sought for retirement. According to research presented this week at the Retirement Planning Council of Ireland Conference at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, four out of 10 people coming up to retirement have now expressed a desire to continue working after they leave their current job, whether for money or as volunteers. RPCI CEO John Higgins has now called for a new way to define the concept of retirement in terms, not just of economic gain, but also for social gain.

Big savers seek out suitable pension funds for nest eggs

Mayo consumers are saving more than ever and are now looking for new ways to shore up their money for the long-term, according to Tony Raftery, manager of Acorn Life in Mayo.

“People are saving more than ever, with recent surveys indicating that adults are now saving an average of nearly €4,000 each year and with over 66,000 adults over 24 years of age in Mayo, that adds up to more than €220 million in 2010 alone,” said Mr Raftery.

Reduced funding a concern for Údarás na Gaeltachta

The board of Údarás na Gaeltachta has expressed concern this week about the future of the authority, and also that of the Department of Community, Equality, and Gaeltacht Affairs, following revelations of a substantial funding drop in next year’s budget. Gaeltacht areas in Mayo supported by the authority are located in north Mayo, Achill, and Tourmakeady.

Irish food and drink exports increase

Recent months have seen a strong recovery in the value of Irish food and drink exports, helped by an improving exchange rate, increased meat export volumes, and a stronger export performance in the beverage, dairy and seafood sectors, according to Bord Bia chief executive Aidan Cotter.
