Funding announced to boost sports participation

Almost a quarter of a million euro is to be invested in Mayo to encourage more people to take part in sporting activities.

Minister of State for Sport, Michael Ring, was in Claremorris Tennis Club last Friday to announce a national investment package of more than €5.1 million from the Irish Sports Council to support Local Sports Partnerships (LSPs ) across the country.

Mayo Sports Partnership is to receive €221,430 under the new package.

A network of 30 LSPs across Ireland work to increase levels of participation in sport in their localities, especially among specific target groups such as older people, girls and women, people with disabilities, and those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Minister Ring said he believed it was “extremely important that people are encouraged and given opportunities to participate in sport and physical activity.

“Participation will lead to a healthier society and an overall improved quality of life,” he said.

“The Government funding announced today will allow the LSP network to continue to provide sporting opportunities for people in local communities throughout Ireland.”

A portion of the funding is to be used to run the Irish Sports Council’s Women in Sport programme at a local level.

The programme aims to raise overall physical activity levels among women.
